Loneliness

The lights were off as I pulled up to park.
Nobody noticed me, I had arrived after dark.
No smiles. No laughter. No "Where have you been?"
Nothing, only silence awaited me within.

As my key turned the lock, I paused to reflect.
Why wasn't it enough, my love and respect?
Was there anything more that I could have done?
Something special, that I, your heart could have won?

Even now that I know it's much too late,
My heart won't give up. It tells me it's fate.
So I'll love you from now until the end
Even when you say that I'm just a friend.

I opened the door and walked up the stairs.
Tears came unbidden as I wished you were there.
No messages beeped when I checked on the phone.
You were still gone and I was truly alone.
